Last Friday was the best day ever – it was our school's annual Sports Day! I had been looking forward to it for weeks. Sports Day is when we get to skip our regular classes and spend the whole day outside playing games and competing in athletic events. It's like a giant field day celebration!
The day started off with an awesome opening ceremony on the big field behind the school. All the students lined up by grade level, waving banners and cheering as the teachers marched in carrying the school flag. The principal gave a speech welcoming everyone to Sports Day and got us even more pumped up and excited. Then we all did some warmup stretches and exercises together to get our bodies ready.
After that, it was time for the events to begin! The first one was the 100-meter dash races. They split us up into heats based on our age and gender. I was in the fourth grade boys' heat. When it was my turn to line up, my heart was beating like crazy! The starter fired the gun and we all took off running as fast as we could. I ended up coming in third place which I

was pretty proud of.
Next up were the longer distance runs like the 400m and 800m races. Those were really tough and had me completely out of breath by the end. But it felt great to push myself and see how far I could go. My friend Alex is an incredible runner – he won both of those events for our grade!
The relay races were my favorite part of the whole day. There's nothing more exhilarating than that feeling of grabbing the baton from your teammate and taking off sprinting while the crowd cheers you on. Our fourth grade boys team made it all the way to the finals before getting edged out for third place. We were still stoked to receive medals though!
Of course, we also had field events like long jump, high jump, and shotput. I'm not really built for those since I'm kind of short and skinny. But it was fun to give them a try anyway. I managed to shotput almost 10 feet which isn't too bad for a little kid!
Around lunchtime, they stopped the events for a break so we could all eat. The cafeteria staff had prepared a huge picnic for us on the lawn with sandwiches, fruit, snacks, and drinks. We all sprawled out on blankets and enjoyed our food together in the sunshine. Some parents had even come to watch and joined us for the picnic. It was a nice chance to rest up before going back for more in the afternoon.
After lunch there were sack races, three-legged races, tug-of-war contests, and other wacky events that had everyone laughing hysterically. Tug-of-war was absolute chaos with kids being pulled off their feet and tumbling every which way. Even some of the teachers got in on that one!
Finally, we closed out the day with an all-grade softball game. It was pretty unorganized pandemonium with kids constantly getting out but then wandering back on the field. The rules didn't seem to matter – we were just having fun running around the bases and trying to whack the ball. When it was time to go home, we were all sunburned, grass-stained, sweat-soaked, and completely tuckered out. But we had had a total blast!
Sports Day is definitely the highlight of the whole school year for me. For one glorious day, we got to take a break from sitting at desks and experience the joy of play, camaraderie, and friendly competition. I slept like a rock that night, dreaming of next year's Sports Day and reliving all the awesome memories from this one. It's what childhood is all about!
